According to Nextgov/FCW, the United Kingdom and European Union have blamed a major Russian intelligence unit for an attempted attack on Poland's power grid last year. The incident involved exploitation of weak router security to breach critical infrastructure systems.

This attribution matters because it confirms a known threat pattern: adversaries are targeting the network perimeter—routers and edge devices—as entry points to critical systems. Routers often run outdated firmware, lack encryption, and exist in network blind spots. Once compromised, they can serve as a persistent foothold for lateral movement into SCADA, operational technology (OT), and control systems that manage power distribution.

The Poland grid attack was attempted, not successful. That distinction is important: it suggests either the attack was detected and stopped, or it failed at some stage of exploitation.
